Human resouce development progroms

I. Training undergraduate and graduate university students to be active as future leaders in the integrated field of medicine and engineering based on regulatory science
   In order to train personnel with thorough knowledge of medical and engineering related advanced science and technology, we have expanded the global COE“ Innovative Integration between Medicine and Engineering Based on Information Communications Technology” which has been undertaken by Yokohama National University and Yokohama City University, to train experts well versed in regulations concerning R&D of medical devices based on advanced technologies and on regulations under the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Law. This will train leaders to continuously and developmentally create regional innovations. Specifically, the Regulatory Science Course will be provided and practical studio training will be offered at the Keihin Waterfront Life Innovation International Special District.

II. Training working researchers and technologists in life-science related R&D and product development based on an understanding of regulatory science
Theme 1 “Regulatory Science for integration of medicine and engineering, pharmaceuticals and drug discovery”
Theme 2 “Foundations of the design and manufacture, and safety evaluation of medical treatment and welfare equipment”

  Education in Regulatory Science in the Field of Integrated Medicine and Engineering has a short history in Japan of only about 10 years, and training of working people has barely begun. In order to efficiently merchandise new medical treatment equipment by connecting the knowledge and technologies of different fields such as medical science and engineering, it is necessary to have human resources who fill the gaps between development organizations, users, and regulations that ensure safety and coordinate them, but the fact is that there is a shortage of people with the necessary knowledge and skills. In order to overcome the above issues, this theme will introduce the most recent research knowledge concerning medical science, engineering, and pharmaceuticals that are linked to medical needs along with advanced cases from overseas, and methods of using third party certification organizations.
Theme 2 “Foundations of the design and manufacture, and safety evaluation of medical treatment and welfare equipment”
  For chemical makers, correct understanding of the harmful effects on humans of the chemicals they manufacture is becoming an increasingly important responsibility of manufacturers. But in fact, excluding some large companies, very few chemical makers employ experts on pathology or toxicity, so that there is an urgent demand for the training of people who can understand harmful effects of chemicals on humans based on knowledge of pathology. These lectures organize basic knowledge required to understand the harmful effects of chemicals on humans, clarify the effects that chemicals have on the human body, and explain the operation of each organ, the mechanisms of the actions of chemicals, and how to read test data while discussing general diseases.

III. Training experts on herbal medicine through E-Learning
  As Japan ages, expectations of “Integrated medical services” based on joint use of Eastern medicine and Western medicine are high. In Japan, about 90% of physicians use herbal medicines, but the fact is that many of them use herbal medicines guided by the concepts of Western medicine so they cannot be fully effective. Thus there is an urgent need to disseminate correct knowledge of herbal medicines. This program will build the world’s first E-Learning materials and their operating system, (LMS: Learning Management System) to disseminate herbal medicines in cooperation with medical universities in the prefecture and herb medicine related associations etc. , and train experts among physicians and medical students to spread this knowledge among researchers working in private companies and the general public.
